Growth Pattern of GH-Transgenic Coho Salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch in Winter Season

Robert H. Devlin
Abstract
Transgenic coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch containing a growth hormone gene construct have been examined for their hormone levels and ability to growth for 90 days in winter season. Food intake of the transgenic coho was approximately 4-fold higher than that of nontransgenic coho salmon of similar size, but feed efficiency of the transgenic coho was 1.1-fold lower than that of size-matched control. Specific growth rates of body weight of the transgenic coho were approximately 1.4-fold (length) or 3-fold(weight) higher than that of nontransgenic coho salmon. GH, total-T4 and total-T3 levels were Increased approximately 2-fold compared to size control salmon. The transgenic animals also displayed head, jaw and opercular abnormalities typical of the effects of this gene construct in coho salmon, indicating that some imbalance in growth processes were induced.
